Announcing an Open Source project
Linux Terminal Server Project
Linux makes a great platform for deploying diskless workstations
that boot from a network server. We have started an open source
project to create the administration tools that will make
setting up a diskless workstation easier.
What is a diskless workstation?
We define a diskless workstation as a computer that doesn't
boot it's operating system from a hard disk (or floppy).
Instead, it locates a server on the local area network and
downloads the operating system across the network. Now that
may seem like it would be terribly slow, but if you think about it,
the Linux kernel is only about 400 kbytes, and if you have
a 10mbit network, you can download the kernel in less than
a half of a second! Upgrade to a 100mbit network, and it gets
even better.
We are very excited about this technology, and we have written
down the details of how we got to this point. It may help you
to understand the significance of the LTSP project.

We have setup several mailing lists to keep you informed of the
progress of the Linux Terminal Server Project. Please

Where to get a network card with a BOOTROM
The LTSP project contains all of the information and software you
will need to build your own diskless workstations and configure
your server. For those of you that don't have the time to build
your own, visit
www.DisklessWorkstations.com
where you can purchase
everything you need, including complete workstations, network boards,
eproms, eprom programmers and fee based consulting.
The Linux Terminal Server Project is made possible by generous sponsorship
from DisklessWorkstations.com.
