Bah! That's an overstatement, for one. :^) 50%? More like 5%! Just go to the Linux Game Tome or LinuxGames.com and search through the titles. Not many have penguins. Besides, Tux (and penguins in general) are cute! Also, has overuse of a particular character ever stopped anyone? (Nintendo -> Mario... Disney Land -> Mickey Mouse... McDonalds -> Ronald McDonald... :^) )
As a software engineer, and not being at all artistic, it's quite difficult for me (and I'm sure, others) to come up with a cute character that people will identify with. The joy of Tux as a character for 'cute' games is that he's widely recognised, there is a ton of opensource artwork and he comes with a certain 'attitude' that OpenSourcer's can identify with. I don't think Tux is over-used - there are maybe a couple of thousand games listed on HappyPenguin - and less than 20 of them are Tux games...unless you are counting things like card games with Tux-themed card backs, etc - then maybe we're up to 30 or so. Still it's only a couple of percent at most. ---------------------------- Steve Baker ------------------------- HomeEmail: <sjbaker1@airmail.net> WorkEmail: <sjbaker@link.com> HomePage : http://www.sjbaker.org Projects : http://plib.sf.net http://tuxaqfh.sf.net http://tuxkart.sf.net http://prettypoly.sf.net -----BEGIN GEEK CODE BLOCK----- GCS d-- s:+ a+ C++++$ UL+++$ P--- L++++$ E--- W+++ N o+ K? w--- !O M- V-- PS++ PE- Y-- PGP-- t+ 5 X R+++ tv b++ DI++ D G+ e++ h--(-) r+++ y++++ -----END GEEK CODE BLOCK-----
