Some time ago I seperated the Gtk-- signal mechanism from the rest of Gtk--
because I thought we could use it for PPlay. The docs are at
http://sunsite.auc.dk/penguinplay/PenguinDoc/messaging/
They're a bit outdated, but they explain the basic idea fairly well. And
the link to the "originals" from there should still be valid ;)
