Ah!  Yes.

You have to have a valid OpenGL rendering context before you make *any* OpenGL call.

However, you said that if you copied the 'broken' image onto the 'good' one, the
polygons that used to work didn't anymore.  That can't be because of when you
open the file...that more or less has to be to do with non-power-of-two-ness.
