Re: OS questions draft, III
Pete Some thoughts on your thoughts. On "sender pay/reader pay
model" , I'm sure they'll find some excuse to try to make us pay and
pay. On the upside, there is a lot of work being done on video
compression techniques based on transmitting only the changes
from frame to frame. This can vastly reduce the bandwidth for cases
where the background is relatively stationary such as for
videoconferencing. It may not be too far off.
I need to adjust my earlier statement on our available ADSL. It will be
asynchronous only at rates above 1Mbps. What we are getting is
RADSL for rate adaptive DSL a new way to charge the consumer.
From http://www.uswest.net
speed kbps 256 512 768 1000 4000/1000 7000/1000
cost/month $40 ~$65 ~$80 ~$125 ~$550 ~$875
Not exactly cheap and you have to pay for your ordinary phone
service and ISP on top of it. Also these are not guarented transfer
rates. Probably priced to hold up the prices on ISDN and T1.
A bit more on multiterminal/multiheaded computers. The following
is a quote from the General Graphics Interface (GGI) Project's web
site: "(making possible, for example, to give two users a complete
console with separate monitors, keyboards, and mice - essentially
sharing the computer)". Berlin is a replacement for the X-Window
system. The first developers release should be out in the fall and
completion is anticipated around 2000.
I suppose we need to get the survey finished. Any ideas anyone.
