I subbed to this list on 13 June, but I've been quiet since then
(hoping something would start happening).

I'll try to give a brief introduction. I'm the leader of the Simple
End-User Linux project (www.seul.org) -- I noticed that Carlos' article
above pointed to the drgenius site. I'm glad you like it. :)
SEUL is a volunteer project to help Linux become an operating system
that the average user can install and operate easily.  Currently SEUL
is working on the non-technical aspects of bringing Linux to end-users
-- Linux in education, Linux in science, advocacy documents, managing
and coordinating communications between projects, and hosting related
development projects.

If you need any help in terms of system resources, we can help out
there (but it looks like you're covered). If you need any publicity at
certain points, we can help. Also, if you're serious about integrating
open-isp with educational opportunities, we have perhaps the primary
(at least outside France) Linux in education mailing list and group:
www.seul.org/edu/.

I graduated from MIT a little while ago, and I was a core member of
their network security team -- identifying breakins, doing system/network
analysis and recovery, communicating with other domains about problems,
etc. I've also been administering Linux machines on the net since 93,
so I've got a good bit of experience there. If this project moves further,
I can help out with the security aspects of the networks (it looks like
it will be mostly ppp connections rather than dialup shell accounts,
which is good) and also with managing a security@open-isp alias (there
*will* be incidents with a free service like this, and handling them
poorly is not the kind of publicity you need).

Of course, time is at a premium; I'm working on a startup these days
and also project leader for the Free Haven project (freehaven.net).

I just wanted to drop you a note to let you know this is a cool idea
and there are other people out there who support the idea and will be
willing to lend a hand when the time comes. Please keep us informed.
