Re: [seul-edu] Alternatives to NIS
David,
I am really frustrated with
this NIS stuff. The reason I thought you had to recompile the kernel is that the
NIS HOWTO makes casual reference to it. However, it doesn't give details. There
is a Makefile in /var/yp, but when I run make in that directory I get error
messages that are a total mystery to me. I am totally in the dark about how to
make this thing work.
All the expensive books I
have bought deal very trivially with setting up an NIS server. Is there
somewhere a HOWTO or other document that gives _detailed_ instructions on
setting up the NIS server?
Thanks,

You don't need to recompile
your kernel. The kernel has absolutely nothing
to do with NIS.
In RH7, the RPM you require is kgcc-1.1.2-40.i386.rpm. Not sure
about 6.2
any more - I think it's
egcs-1.1.2-24.
