[The College's IT Manager and Director of the Learning Innovation Centre,
Dr Richard Wraith] said Trinity's IT initiatives were also notable in
using the fully open-source free software known broadly as Linux. He said
the Linux operating system was used throughout the College, including on
servers for the network, the web and email and for web terminals and the
Trinity Foundation Studies teaching laboratory.
He said using the open source software helped students better understand
the concepts and principles behind computers and IT and produced
significant operational benefits including reduced costs, greater computer
security, high reliability ("they never crash") and flexibility in
tailoring the system to particular needs.
