I installed swarm on solaris last night.  PITA! I couldn't use the
binary packages, as they turned out to be incompatible with some of
other libraries (namely tcl/tk, of course >:|) on my machine.  I
recompiled nearly everything, installed it (went fairly smoothly, but
took forever).  Today I downloaded the applications, tried them,
compiled them after a lot of effort, only to get totally totally
unfunctional executables.  It may be a misconfiguration problem on my
side (probably is, my system is a mess right now).  Maybe using linux
packages will work well.  I don't have access to a linux machine at the
moment,  when I get one, I'll give it another try.  But my overall
impression is that swarm is just to complicated to be used at school
environment.  A pity, it looks like a great system.
