ok, i spontaneously started working on a gnome gradebook again the other 
day, starting almost completley from scratch. this time, i'm going to go about 
implementing the backend first, as opposed to the other way around. the new 
code already loads XML files, as a matter of fact. it's in GNOME CVS under 
the module GBook (not gbook - that is the old one).
