If the card will do PXE, use that instead (you can relay it through an
EtherBoot image using, OTToMH, PXEClient). The images used in relaying the
boot are generated by mknbi-set so will cover all cards that you have a
kernel module for.

Even getting a ROM for those could be an issue. If the laptop also has a hard
disk, floppy or CD-ROM, you can use that to launch an EtherBoot image (from
LILO, for example). This will also work for desktop machines, of course.
