Great to be getting advice from Kiev (pardon my provincialism).
Thanks for that addition.  I have been exploring the hdparm
operations you suggested to improve the disk speed and am
prepared to try them on the drives I'm working on.  I presume
the hdparm tweaking can be done on the wiped-clean harddrives before
transferring any ext2 files and partitions to them since
hdparm addresses prom(?) settings on the drive itself.
