[seul-edu] faster graphics in web pages?
I think I mentioned this already but that clustering
presentation was done using Latex and latex2html.
This is probably something that everyone already
knows, but I discovered that you can increase the speed
that a page with graphics will load considerably by
reducing everything to 72 dpi (that's the highest
resolution that most monitors can give anyway.)
There is no need to have, say, 300x300 dpi unless
you are going to print the image.
To reduce an image to 72 dpi, I used the convert
command (from the ImageMagik package):
convert -density 72x72 picture.gif picture.jpg
You can do fast batch conversions of images this way
also.
We have very slow connection speeds here in
southeast AZ (we're really in the boonies), so anything
that makes a page load faster is important to us.
I suspect other people might have the same concerns.
Everybody have a good 'end of the year'. (I'm going
to sleep for a whole week.)
