It's not quite the same, but you might want to try the Magic SysRQ key (an
option for all 2.2.x kernels). I've had X crash on me a few times, and Magic
SysRQ has always worked (except for once when my box wouldn't even respond to
pings anymore; I suppose that X must have brought down the kernel as well
(2.1.something)).
