Currently, xf86vmode let you switch between modes already defined by the
user in their XF86Config (much like pressing Ctrl-Alt-Keypad+ would do,
but you can get a list and jump to the one you want). This is useful to
use before going using xf86dga. Don't forget to restore the mode
afterward, this isn't automatic.

With the lastest XFree86, version 3.9.x (the preview to the upcoming
4.x), xf86dga is at version 4.0 and allows you to set arbitrary video
modes, even switching color depth (which you can't do with xf86vmode).
