need help with first steps

I've just started learning C.  Specifically I'm going through
"Absolute Beginner's Guide to C" and "Practical C."  I'm using Linux
to develop on.  Going through examples and exercises is ok but I
need a project.  

The project I would like to tackle would be a console program. 
There would be an "X" that would move left and right and shoot ".'s"
at incoming "0's."  

My question is, Does anyone know of any source code, tutorials or
books out there that would show me how to: Clear the screen so the
prompt is gone and I'm in the game environment and how to make
characters move randomly and under control in this environment?  I'm
not subscribed to the list yet so if you could cc me I would
appreciate it.
