I've had a lot of success with Mencoder - which comes with Mplayer.

The trouble with all of these packages is the **INSANE** number of options
they have for tuning the results. Mencoder has something between 50 and 100
command line options - many with sub-options and sub-sub-options.

Unless you are an utter guru, it's really hard to know what to do to get
either better quality or smaller file size.

However, with all the defaults left to default, you do get a reasonable
movie file out of it.
