Yes - I regard scripts as ways to connect together large-ish building
blocks - so whilst OOP would have been nice, I didn't sweat it.

I don't pick non-x86 CPU's by special choice - and certainly not on the
basis of performance.
Some of the stuff I work on is for Linux PDA's and some for a future
hand-held game machine that'll run Linux (and do reasonable 3D). If
you want a low power consumption CPU, you're basically not looking at
Pentiums.

Yes. Exactly.

Well, the alternative 'event-driven' approach has the exact same
restriction.

If you aren't confident about writing a good parser, I *STRONGLY*
advise
you to learn YACC and LEX (or BISON and FLEX in a GNU world).
These things can write parsers for you in about as much time as it takes
to write down the grammar for the language you want to parse.
It's easy.
