I spoke for a while with Nils Lohner (treasurer of
SPI, also Debian publicity guy). He wants me to write up a blurb
about Independence and send it to debian-devel, at which point he
says some Debian developers will magically appear and help us port
our packages from rpm to dpkg. I told him it was a great idea, but
I was going to wait until we've got 0.2 out so things are more
stable.
I added an 'ftp2' cname to the independence and seul domains,
so now ftp2.seul.org points to belegost and ftp.seul.org points
to cran. Belegost is handling the ftp load much better than cran
did (what caused a loadavg of 2 on cran causes a loadavg of .1 on
belegost). What load, you say?
[root@belegost adm]# grep "Mar 10" xferlog|grep independence|wc -l
4
[root@belegost adm]# grep "Mar 11" xferlog|grep independence|wc -l
1623
[root@belegost adm]# grep "Mar 12" xferlog|grep independence|wc -l
5282
[root@cran adm]# tail -20000 xferlog|grep "Mar 7"|grep independence|wc -l
41
[root@cran adm]# tail -20000 xferlog|grep "Mar 8"|grep independence|wc -l

[root@cran adm]# tail -20000 xferlog|grep "Mar 9"|grep independence|wc -l

[root@cran adm]# tail -20000 xferlog|grep "Mar 10"|grep independence|wc -l

[root@cran adm]# tail -20000 xferlog|grep "Mar 11"|grep independence|wc -l

[root@cran adm]# tail -20000 xferlog|grep "Mar 12"|grep independence|wc -l

Belegost can handle several orders of magnitude higher load currently.
I'm not worried about slashdot (famous last words...) at least in
terms of taking down belegost. It might hose my T3, but hey. ;)
