Yes, I remembered right as I was pushing the send button! We are like
half a day apart. So I have not posted anything to the list yet.
You can use the gcc web site to monitor the list at:
http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc/2000-02/
Here are the last relevant posts from the list that may help. I will
wait to here from you (at French time:-))

Using gcc 2.95.2 and the latest linux kernels should be OK as long as the
latest version of binutils is used.
Alan Cox put some fixes into the kernels for 2.95.2.
I use binutils-2.9.5.0.22
Works for me.

No, Alan didn't say that. He (and several other linux developers) said
that gcc-2.95.2 may trigger some problems when you try to compile linux
with it.

Some people have problems, others have not, YMMV. If your gcc 2.95.2
compiled 2.2.x kernel crashes, don't complain to the linux kernel list,
because it is well known that certain kernel configuration crash with gcc
2.95.2. The latest 2.2.x kernels (2.2.14 at time of writing) have less
problems with gcc-2.95.2.
It is safe to compile linux 2.3.x with gcc-2.95.2. If it crashes, you are
encouraged to report it to the linux-kernel mailinglist.
