I don't think you need to rebuild X (over two hours in a 166+) but you
will need a lot of disk space.

But before rebuilding xfsft rpm first thing is look at how good xfsft
is (can it be put in the front of the font path) and how much
resources it needs.

Ah! I have found that when an app does not specify the font it wants X
seems to use the lowest (in alphanumeric order) font in the first
directory of the font path.  That makes for xvidtune displaying
pseudo-chinese if you put one of the freefonts or sharefonts (don't
remember which) directories as first element.  And if you move the
Speedo and Type1 directories provided with X in front of the font path
then netscape does not display any URL ("caracter not available in this
font")

If we insert a TT server in front of the font path we must ensure it
provides a usable default font.
