The ultimate UML reference is http://www.rational.com/uml
There you'll find UML 1.1 specs in html and pdf format and the list of
recomended books.
I haven't read any UML books (standarts are quite descriptive), but the
most frequently recommended one is Martin Fowler's "UML Distilled"
(strange, it's not listed under Recommended Reading at Rational website)

When we'll get through initial ideas settlement, and get something done, I
guess the result system may be used as IDEF1x tool as well.
